The Restaurant Sobriety Project:

It gets better.

Thank you so much for wanting to participate in this project. Let me start with a bit of q&a:

Q: What is this?

A: The Restaurant Sobriety Project is a collection of stories, presented as videos and a blog. It will allow members of the restaurant industry who are living in sobriety to share their stories. It will allow members of the restaurant industry who are struggling with addiction or drug/alcohol abuse to find inspiration, hear success stories, learn that it is possible, that IT GETS BETTER.

Q: Who can participate?

A: You can, if you are a member of the restaurant industry or associated with it, and have been in recovery or sobriety for at least one year. Why one year? Well, we had to make the cut off somewhere. The purpose of these stories is to give hope and tools to folks in early sobriety and to those who are considering sobriety. If you have been sober less than a year, you are still in early sobriety. Check out the videos, read the posts, and plan to share your story when you hit your year mark- we know you will! We want to hear from chefs, line cooks, dishwashers, managers, servers, bussers, bakers, sous chefs, pastry chefs, prep cooks, bartenders, hosts, stewards, the whole lot of you.

Q: What about anonymity?

A: Anonymity is an important part of recovery for some people. People have all sorts of reasons for wanting to maintain their anonymity, both personal and professional. We totally respect this. What we are looking for in this project are people who are willing to put themselves out there in the videos to be role models for others. If that’s not you, no problem! Consider contributing your story as a blog post!

Q: How does it work?

A: First step is to complete the form below. After that, you will be contacted about recording and uploading your video, or submitting your story for the blog. You will need to record a video on your phone and upload it to a google drive server. More information will be provided in an email following your form submission. Not tech savvy? We will help you! We can do this!

Q: I submitted the form and I have’t heard back!

A: Don’t worry! If you submitted the form, you are in the queue! We have full time restaurant jobs and are doing this project on the side. We will get back to you soon. In the meantime, you can practice writing and telling your story using the outline provided in the email. Aim for around 10 minutes of talk time, and focus your story on how living and working in sobriety gets better. This will mean different things to different people. Feel free to include info about your dark days, but keep your story focused on the positive: the good things that have happened in sobriety, the stories of friendship and connection. Thank you for your patience!
